Things to remember on moving day
If you’re moving into a property, the procedure is straightforward; all you do once you have collected the keys, is move in! However, it would be prudent to take a note of the meter readings and phone them through to the appropriate authorities, to ensure that you are not charged for the previous owner’s gas, electricity or water.
There is quite a bit more to remember, though, if you have sold your property and are moving out.
Firstly, if you have agreed with the buyers to leave certain items at the property, particularly if they are included in the sale price, then you must leave them.
You should ensure that the property is cleared of rubbish, although any rubbish left in the dustbins would be acceptable. When clearing your property, don’t forget the loft if you have one, garden shed, garage or any other outbuildings. It would be a very good idea to leave the property as clean as you would like to find it.
Take meter readings and phone them through to the appropriate authorities.
Lock all doors and windows and hand the keys to the Estate Agents or the buyer, first making sure that the sale moneys have been received by your Solicitor. Make sure you hand over any keys which neighbours or family members may be holding, along with that spare key hidden, in case of emergencies!
Don’t forget to have your mail re-directed to your new home.
Make sure that if you have a mobile telephone, that it is charged and ready for use. Your Solicitors or Estate Agents may need to contact you quickly.
